ABSTRACT

Rehabilitation in orthopaedic and surgical conditions is a process that starts with a structure-specific exercise-based intervention in the early phases and progresses restoring functional abilities to maximise individuals’ occupational performance.  Hands are the most exposed and vulnerable parts of the body; the majority of traumatic injuries are work-related and frequently involve many different structures and systems, requiring complex surgical procedures followed by intensive rehabilitation therapy.  Hand dysfunction can result in limitation or loss of independence in all performance areas, deeply affecting a person’s life; hand therapy must therefore focus not only on physical impairment but also on psychosocial factors.
